Plastic became a symbol of mass culture, as absolutely anything and everything can be made of plastic. What’s more, plastic promises cleanliness, safety, and an uncomplicated life. “LIFE” magazine celebrated the new world of disposable products with an article entitled “Throwaway Living”: The average modern family no longer washed its plates. The relaxed housewife bought plastic plates, then simply threw them away after use.
