The ecological timebomb
Plastic has permeated all lifeworlds: The seas as much as the beaches, the woods, the landscape, the cityscape, the bodies of humans and animals. Plastic has turned from a symbol for progress, modernity, and democratization of consumption to one of the greatest ecological problems. Packaging alone makes up a third of all plastics produced today. Numerous international treaties seek to control the problem. However, to date these efforts mainly focus on waste disposal – and not on the production of the material itself.
